St. Louis Doula Village: What is It?

We are a co-op made of solo doulas who want to provide a solid backup network for our clients. Our “village” is committed to supporting each other’s clients’ as if they were our own.

Having reliable backups is a necessary part of being a birth worker. Birth is unpredictable & babies come on their own schedule. Even with the best planning it is impossible for a doula to guarantee they can be 100% present for all of their clients 100% of the time. Life happens. Doulas are human. Sometimes illness hits a household. Sometimes births overlap. Sometimes emergencies pop up. And sometimes a birth requires days worth of support & multiple doulas are needed.

Through this co-op you can expect your doula to have solid, experienced backup support. This means if your own doula is unavailable, one of us will be there. This dedicated model means we are well prepared to step in for the others if needed. We achieve this by being a close knit group. We meet to discuss clients’ needs on a regular basis. Share intake & birth plans with each other. Even offer an opportunity for our clients to meet the other doulas through quarterly meet-ups.

There is a high level of burnout for doulas. We need support too. It is our hope to continue to do this important work for as long as we are called to do it & this requires us to have the help we need to serve our clients well. We need time to rest after a long birth. We may need to leave a birth to tend to our own families. Someone to handle phone communication while we sleep in anticipation of joining a client in labor. And sometimes we just need someone to troubleshoot difficult situations with other people who understand. This co-op was formed to help doulas & families receive the best support & care possible.

We all know moms (new & experienced) do best when supported by a village. Our hope is that all of our clients feel like they are being supported by our village even though they are hiring a solo doula.

Who Are We?

Collectively, as doulas, we have attended almost 800 births with a combined 35.5 years of experience. We have supported all kinds of births in all kinds of places. And while providing birth support is what we are known for we also have doulas who offer birth classes, postpartum care, cloth diapering classes, & so much more!

But we are also moms like you. Who have had varying birth experiences ourselves. Between the six of us, we have 21 kids! Their ages range from 22 years old to just a few months. Through the journey of motherhood we have gained a lot of wisdom & experience that helps us in working with our clients. We have welcomed our babies in many ways: homebirth, planned CS for a breech baby & then a HBAC!, birth center births, unplanned unassisted births at home & in the car, unmedicated hospital births, medicated births, & induction. As well as adoption through foster care.

Our mission is to provide compassionate, experienced support to all of the families that we work with.
