I am honored to serve families in the greater St. Louis area.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.comBlogger26125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-10550638151344854902023-04-12T07:56:00.003-07:002023-04-23T19:38:22.411-07:00What is in My Birth Bag

As a seasoned doula, I have figured out what tends to need to be in my bag & has been proven to be helpful to most clients. Below is a list of literally everything that is in my bag every single day, every single birth.

Rebozo

Any woman having a baby needs to have access to a rebozo! It can be used for tons of things that can help make labor more comfy & to help it progress. While my beloved rainbow rebozo was not purchased from this supplier, this is the source that I highly recommend. Their rebozos are authentic & affordable.

Knee Pads

Laboring takes some physical work. Did you know most women, when given no instruction, choose to labor leaning over things. This can mean a lot of strain on your knees. These are the knee pads I carry. I love that they are small and separate, as they are easy to pack up. And I had a client simply stand on them the other day, a use I never thought of! Those hard hospital floors tend to be hard on your feet too! These are the knee pads that I own & clients have loved.

Heating Pad

This has literally been the best $20 I have ever spent! Use it on your aching back from back labor. Fold it up, put it under your belly to help with contractions. It is flat enough that I use it on clients' backs along with my rebozo, which can hold it in place as well as allow you to do shake the apples to help baby's position. It is also great for those postpartum cramps and a back that aches from being in bed for so long. Side note for the doulas, I used this for myself the other day when I was trying to rest in a very cold hospital room. This is the one that I have loved!

Essential Oil Diffuser

Essential oils can certainly help create a calming environment. Some women do not prefer oils to be diffused but I still love this diffuser for the fact that it puts off different color lights, which can also contribute to a calm space.

Essential Oils

Below are the oils I absolutely recommend to have on hand. Not every woman in labor will appreciate oils, so I recommend smelling them in the bottle first. If you love them, you can just smell them out of the bottle. You can also put them on a tissue and wear it under your bra strap. Some can be used topically with a carrier oil. And if you love them, you can diffuse them. Just know if you diffuse, it will not leave the room if you decide it is too much. And also, not all are safe for baby when they are on the outside. So I suggest diffusing them in a space in which you will not be birthing, like the bathroom at the hospital (although know that is a perfectly acceptable place to give birth!).

Earthley Calming Blend this blend is literally just AMAZING! Even if you are not having a baby, just buy it! Great for when you need to calm down & center yourself for the work that is coming.

Earthley Morning Burst Blend this blend is perfect when you need me a pick me up. I use it when clients need to get moving & motivated. But honestly diffuse it on a daily basis in my home because it is so amazing!

Planet Therapy Lemon Essential Oil lemon oil is great for a pick-me-up as well as help with nausea.

Plant Therapy Clary Sage Essential Oil clary sage can help with many female reproductive issues, including the intensity of contractions or period cramps. I like to have it on hand when we also need to have contractions pick up.

Plant Therapy Lavender Essential Oil lavender is synonymous with relaxation, I use it when clients need to rest.

Plant Therapy Peppermint Essential Oil peppermint has many uses. It can be uplifting. It can help with nausea. Mint can also be associated with pain relief. I do caution on using this one in labor, especially when close to birth, as it can affect breastfeeding. My favorite uses for it are putting a drop in a basin, to help with nausea while clients are throwing up. Or putting a drop in the toilet when clients are struggling to pee.

Earthley Tension Relief I love this for me & for my clients! Labor is hard on everyone in the birth space. You need to have ways to help relieve tight muscles. I love this blend because it does not have mint, which can affect breastfeeding. It is warm & so soothing!

LED Votive Candles

These little candles fit so well in my birth bag & are cheap enough that I do not have to be upset if I forget them. They can create a calming environment even in a cold, sterile hospital bathroom. They are small enough to fit into tight spaces, even on the precarious edge of a hospital tub. I bought these exact ones, the price point is amazing!

TENS Unit

I will be honest, I do not use this a lot. Most of my clients who find relief from it are experiencing back labor. While we try to remedy the cause of the back labor (usually baby's position) a TENS unit can provide great relief. I also like it for transferring from home to hospital in active labor. This one I have is not super expensive.

Small Organization Bags

If you have met me, you know I am a bit type A. I like all the small things to be organized in my big backpack & this assortment of cute little bags are so stylish & practical.

This one pictured holds my LED candles, TENS unit, extra pads & charging cord, honey sticks, hair ties, travel pack of tissues, combs for acupressure, small affirmation cards, & extra batteries for my twinkle lights. While my exact one does not show available, this is a comparable one that is equally as cute. I love it because it is waterproof & thick! Though it is small, it is roomy!

This is one that holds my snacks. It was a gift from a dear friend. While this one is no longer available either, this one is equally cute!

And this cute Blue Q pencil bag holds my essential oils. I also have one that holds my herbal tinctures.

Bendy Straws

Straws are seemingly unimportant but it is one of my most used items! This is a 300 pack, I obviously do not carry all 300 on me, just a handful. But I love these ones because they have the capability to be long & bendy. It works well for those huge water bottles or they do not have to be extended & so work well for regular sized bottles too.

Combs

Holding combs can be a great pain reliever for some laboring women. When held in the palm, with teeth pressed into the bottom crease of the fingers, it hits acupressure points that can make the intensity of labor less. I love these combs!

Fan

Fans can be a game changer for laboring moms. I love using a stroller fan as they can be so versatile. They can be looped around the side of a hospital bed. The legs can be used to stand it up on pretty much any surface. And even hung from an IV pole. This is the fan I have in my bag! I love that it can be charged instead of having to constantly replace batteries.

Twinkle Lights

I LOVE these lights! They are so cute and so functional! The lights provide a calming ambiance and can also be used to hold the affirmations cards that I also carry.

Affirmation Cards

Affirmations can help to emotionally & mentally support women in labor. Having cards hung for them to see or for others to read, can create a calming space for everyone. My affirmation cards were gifted to me from a loving client, they were made by Renegade Mama. I cannot find them. But if I had to buy some now, I would purchase the Mama Natural Affirmation Cards. Clients have used both sets of cards and loved them!

For Christian clients, I carry these cards, from Daily Grace. The tinctures I carry on me are ones that are sold to the general public. I encourage all clients to talk with their providers and the owner of the herbal shop, to ensure the herbs would be safe for you to use. I also encourage clients to do their own research. The ones I carry are available for use by clients who have ensured that they are safe for them. Forest & Meadow in St. Louis carries specially formulated by an herbalist who has throughly studied women's health. If you are local, you can certainly go straight to the store. But if you are not, they ship!

Labor Ease this tincture does an amazing job at helping laboring women relax during the intensity of labor. It is healthy, as these contractions will help your uterus return to normal size. And they keep you from hemorrhaging. Nursing will bring these contractions on. And the more babies you have, the worse they tend to be. This tincture can help with those cramps. I find that it works best when you use a heating pad on your belly as well.

Snacks

Nourishment during labor is SO important! For literally everyone in the room. These snacks are packed for me but I like to have options on hand that would be good for a laboring mama as well as her partner if need be. It is intense. It can push you to your very limits. One way to ensure you can endure what labor throws your way is to ensure you have a firm mental & spiritual foundation. Ensuring your space is calm is a huge way to ensure you are mentally coping well. As a seasoned doula, these are the tried & true methods I have seen work:

Stay at home as long as possible: obviously this applies to those who plan on leaving their homes to give birth. Once you enter the hospital or birth center, no matter how homey it can feel, you will only be focusing on having your baby, which can lead to stress, especially if you are still earlier in labor when you arrive. Ideally, you are arriving when you feel you will have the baby soon after or if you planned on an epidural and seem ready to receive it. Staying home allows you the freedom to move and do what you want. Instinctively women know how to have their babies and being at home allows you to fully embrace that intuition. You will also not have to worry about navigating the staff and the stress that can come with that. When you are in active labor, the change of environment is less likely to affect your labor. But please know that it can take a bit of time to acclimate once you have arrived. Follow the steps below on how to establish the environment once you have arrived.

Keep your space dim/dark: Even if you are in a hospital, the lights can still be kept dim. There are a few medical procedures that may require light, like having an IV started or an epidural placed. But otherwise, ensure that the staff and/or people present know to keep the lights dim or off. This will allow your body to know it is time to relax and sink into the work you must do. If the monitors or IV pump lights bother you, stack towels over them and turn them away from you. Pack a sleep mask to make sleeping easier.

Ask everyone to keep noise & talking to a minimum: Privacy is key to relaxing during labor. And extra noise can make it hard to ensure you feel you have your privacy. Have it on your birth plan that you would like everyone to speak softly while they are in your room. And ask that they only speak to your partner and/or doula if questions need to be asked. Eliminating all extra noise, especially in a hospital, can be tough. If you feel the need, bring noise cancelling ear plugs.

Play relaxing music and/or tracks: If music helps you relax or you have been listening to certain tracks during pregnancy, in prep for labor (like Hypnobirthing) you will want to ensure you have a way to listen to it. I suggest my clients either use a waterproof bluetooth speaker or waterproof bluetooth earbuds. You can build playlists on Spotify. Youtube also has a good selection of free relaxing birth tracks. I also have had Christian clients love the Christian Hypnobirthing App.

Add in hints of yellow/amber lighting: Yellow or amber light is the light your body associates with going to sleep, as it what is natural in the evening, compared to the blue light of day time. If you are having a home birth, candles are perfect for this. But if you worry about the risk of fire or having your baby outside your home, these flameless LED candles are beautiful alternatives. Twinkle lights can also add to a relaxing ambiance, no matter where you are birthing. You will definitely want battery operated ones if you are in the hospital, as they may have policies about lights that can be plugged in.

Use essential oils: Certain oils can help you relax. Diffusing them is not a good option for everyone. I suggest keeping the oil in the bottle and smelling for a few minutes, to ensure it does not make you feel bad. If you would like to diffuse, I would suggest keeping it to small spaces, like your bath room or use a small diffuser right next to you, so the room is not filled with the oils. Not all oils are safe to be in the air once baby is born. You could also just put a few drops on a tissue or cotton ball to keep by you, that way you can throw it away if it does not work. I also had a client suggest putting it on a maxi pad and sticking it to a wall near you, that way it stays in place but can be thrown away if you do not like it. These are some oils I have found to be helpful:

Earthley Calming Blend

Plant Therapy Chill Out

Plant Therapy Lavender

Plant Therapy Tranquil Blend

Affirmations: Reading or having affirmations, read or spoke to you can help crate a calm space. It can be as simple as you memorize a few that resonate with you & remind your partner and the other people in your space to say them to you. But if you want, you could write them on notecards to display. Or you could ask those that come to your baby shower to write their favorite affirmations down on a notecard and even decorate them. There are plenty of beautiful pre-made ones that you can purchase as well. And if you are Christian, you can get these scripture cards. And these lights help you display your affirmations.

Have a team that you trust: For you to fully relax & allow yourself to ease into labor, you will need be surrounded by people who respect you and that you feel you can truly trust. It is very important to ensure that you with the right people well before labor begins, so make sure you are asking the right questions during pregnancy. You will also want to ensure your birth place staff will be supportive. While you have a little less control on which nurses will attend know that you can get a new one. Simply ask for the charge nurse and request a new nurse. You do have control over who enters your space.

magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-10489122063696496062023-03-15T08:36:00.003-07:002023-03-15T08:36:25.124-07:00How to Have a Christ Centered Birth

This picture is from a client's birth, in which her midwife prayed over her again & again. She asked groups to pray for her. The whole space was filled with God's word. There was so much love & protection in the room. If this is what you envision for your birth, please read on.

God is always with you whether you actively invite Him into your birth space. Although there are many ways to intentionally integrate your faith into your birth; it can help you feel at peace & cope better with what your birth demands of you. Below are ways that you can actively set up a Christ centered birth:

Hire a Christian birth team: Having like-minded people in your birth space can bring such peace of mind. Knowing that people share in your faith, that know how to help you with prayer, scripture, that can sing you worship songs, etc. can elevate your birth space to a whole other level. While it certainly is not necessary to have an entire Christian birth team, at least make sure they all know your wishes and feel comfortable in supporting you in these ways.

Utilize the Christian Hypnobirthing app: This program is revolutionary when it comes to a Christ-centered birth. The app contains tracks for scripture, breathing exercises for labor, and Christian affirmations. The app does need to be purchased but it is so worth it! If you believe this would be a useful tool for you, I recommend starting it right away. Listen to it while trying to fall asleep at bedtime, it will train your body to recognize it, when you need to relax, which is such an important tool for labor. This app can create such an inspiring & relaxing birth space.

If you are Catholic, the Made for This app, is amazing: This app also has an array of helpful tracks perfectly tailored for your faith.

Write out verses on note cards & tape them up in your birth space: Affirmations & verses can be a powerful way to remind you that Christ is walking with you during your birth. You can use apps to make beautiful images that can be printed as photos. You can also purchase pre-made ones. Or simply write them out on note cards. I have even seen friends & family create beautiful, individualized ones together at a baby shower!

Organize prayer circles who can be contacted when you are in labor: While pregnant, you could reach out to family, friends, and church members to ask that they pray for you when you are in labor. You can organize them all into a FB messenger group or group text, that way everyone can be contacted at the same time. I have also known moms to send out packets at their showers, with prayer cards & candles, to be utilized by those praying for you.

Play worship music during your birth: During pregnancy, organize a play list of your favorite songs. One client said she put together a mix of relaxing music for when she needed to rest & surrender to the process along with energizing music for times she needed the energy to go on. Make sure your birth team knows how to access your list.

Prepare by reading Christian birth books: This is a list of my absolute favorite books that I recommend to my clients.

Made for This

Holy Labor

Labor with Hope

Nine Months with God & Your Baby

Breath as Prayer (this is not specifically for birth but I feel could be a handy tool)

Pray, Pray, PRAY!:As all Christians know, prayer is one of the most potent tools we have. Having people in your space who will continually pray for you can bring so much peace & power.

Trust that God is with you, even if birth looks different than you thought: Birth requires strength & flexibility. It is a process that demands us to understand how little control we actually have. But birth is also an opportunity to feel God's presence & protection especially in times of uncertainty. Pray for the strength to deal with whatever birth throws your way; for the strength & knowledge to do what is necessary for the well-being of you & your baby. Pray for your team to have the expertise to support you in the unique way that you need. And pray that love & peace fill your birth space, no matter how your baby needs to enter this world.

My hope is that you know how beautiful your birth can be and will be. That you trust that God is with you. That your team helps you create a space in which you relax & allow birth to happen, however it unfolds. And that you have a whole team of believers lifting you up in prayer. The birth of your baby will be one of the best days of your life & you will all be enveloped in perfect love & protection.

magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-35308403301985266812023-03-09T06:08:00.003-08:002023-04-06T13:37:52.292-07:00Finding Your Perfect Doula

Way to go on considering hiring a doula! This post is all about ways to not only find doulas to interview but how to ensure they are a good fit for your birth team.

My recommendation, before you even start your search, you need to consider what is important to you when it comes to a doula, that way you can gauge if the ones you are interviewing fit the bill. Below is a list of things you could possibly consider:

Experience: How experienced do you want your doula to be? Are you ok with a new doula? Do you feel you need an experienced one?

Connection: Is it most important that you connect with someone, that they feel like a friend you can tell anything to?

Cost: What is your budget? And what type of fee schedule would fit your needs?

Proximity: How important is it that your doula be from your area? Do you need your doula to live close to you or are you ok if they need to travel a bit to get either to you or your birth place?

Personality: Are you looking for a doula that feels like a motherly figure? One that feels like a sister or a friend? One that feels more like a coach? One who has a calming voice?

Faith: Do you want your doula to have the same beliefs as you?

Training: Would you like your doula to have a specific training, i.e. Spinning Babies, self hypnosis? Be certified? Have used a certain organization to train/certify?

Offer Other Services: Would you like a birth doula that also offers lactation services, postpartum doula work, placenta encapsulation, etc?

Insurance: Some companies will cover doulas, they usually do have to be certified with certain agencies. If this is something you know you will need, research what the criteria is ahead of time so you can present it to any doulas who you could possibly interview.

FSA/HSA: If you plan on paying using these methods, you will first need to know if your company covers doula services & then the criteria for submitting claims/paying/getting reimbursement. You will also need to ensure your doula can provide proper documentation to help you submit invoices/receipts.

Solo Doula vs. Group: Would you prefer to work with a doula who is solo, to hopefully have that doula attend your birth? Or would you prefer to work with a group of doulas in an agency/co-op/collective?

How do you view their role: Are you wanting a doula who provides strong partner support? One who will loudly advocate for you?

Once you have decided what you hope to find in your doula, you could try finding doulas using the following methods (Please keep in mind, you need to ask why certain people are referring to certain doulas. Their reasoning on why someone is good may not match your needs.):

Ask you family & friends who they have used. The key to this is getting referrals from people who are planning a similar birth to what you want.

Join local FB birth groups & get referrals. Posting in groups can seem overwhelming, as you may get a lot of comments. Be specific with your needs. List the area you live in, where you plan on delivering, what your due date is, and what you hope to find in a doula. This could help limit the amount of comments you get to doulas who are available for your area and due date. But sift through the comments and see which ones were made by actual clients & see if they list reasons why they liked a particular doula. You could even ask to private message some responders to inquire about their experiences.

Go to doulamatch.net. This is an amazing resource that will fine tune a search based on your location and due date. The doulas must pay to be displayed on this site so it may not be an accurate representation of all the doulas in your area. But it lists a lot of information on each doula, like their experience, their training, pricing, etc. which could help shorten your search time.

Receive referrals from your provider (but I caution you to not limit yourself to only their list). Not all providers will have doula referrals especially if they do not typically have patients who work with them. But some providers who do can be a wealth of information on doulas simply because they get to see them in action and are exposed to them on a consistent basis.

Find "Meet the Doula Events" in your area. These events tend to focus on families getting to meet multiple doulas in one evening. These short meetings do not replace a formal interview but can help you get a short list of who you would like to interview further.

Ask your other providers, like your Webster chiropractor. If you are seeking other pregnancy related services, those practitioners may have great insight into your area's doulas. If they are exposed to many pregnant women, they would have heard a few doulas' names. And they probably have networked with some too.

Once you have a short list of who you may want to interview, I suggest you look further into these doulas. You can find a lot of information using the following resources:

Their social media pages

Their business websites

Local birth & parenting FB groups (search their name in the search bar & read through their comments on posts & see what info they may share publicly, to gauge if they seem to match what you are looking for).

And once you have the interviews set up, here is a list of commonly asked questions that you can ask. Although I find organic conversation is always a good indicator of how you mesh with a certain doula while allowing you to get all the information you need on their services. I tend to find I get hired by families more when we just talk vs. the ones that feel like a traditional job interview.

How long have you been a doula?

How many births have you attended?

What organization did you train through?

Do you have any additional training?

How do you support partners?

How many times during pregnancy will we meet? What will we discuss?

How do you help me advocate for myself in the birth space?

How do you work with medical staff & providers?

Do you come to my house while in labor, before transferring to my birth place?

Do you have a cap on how many hours you will provide support? Do you charge extra if we go over that time?

Do you work with backups? What happens if you are sick or at another birth?

How do you handle payments?

What kind of support do you provide? How would you describe your style?

Where do your clients primarily birth? Hospitals? Home? With doctors? Midwives?

This is my birth plan (insert whatever type of birth you envision). Do you support this often? How would you help me?

After each interview, it can be helpful to take time to decide how you thought it went. Many times, people know there is a connection right away. The conversation was effortless & felt like that doula checked all of their boxes. And sometimes, you feel you want to keep exploring options. When you find the right match, it will feel right.

Good luck on your search!

magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-5615315391375200342023-02-01T08:41:00.003-08:002023-02-27T07:44:48.490-08:00My Favorite Products for a Naturally Healthy Pregnancy

There are so many ways to naturally deal with all that pregnancy throws at you. If yours does start in the morning, it can be helpful to keep snacks, like crackers, near your bedside & eat before getting up for the day.

The nausea can be attributed to the hormones associated with pregnancy. There are many helpful things that can stave off the nausea including lemon, ginger, mint, and B6.

But you should seek help from a functional medicine doctor if the nausea is extreme & seems to rule your life. By staying hydrated you keep yourself regular, you help ensure your amniotic fluid level stays good, & it can prevent headaches. Drinking half your weight in ounces should be your daily goal. As well as ensuring you’re eating a healthy amount of good quality salt. Drinking of a bottle with a straw makes it easier to drink the recommended amount. And coconut water & electrolyte mixes can be healthy ways to up your electrolyte intake. With coconut water, you’ll want a product that is raw, over pasteurized. And with both coconut water & electrolyte mixes, steer clear of products that contain added sugar (which can dehydrate you even more!) Low protein intake is linked with high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia. You will want to ensure you get 70-100 grams/day. Eating real food is the healthiest way to get protein. You will want to ensure you are eating protein rich foods like chicken, beef, eggs, beans/legumes, and broccoli. If you are struggling to get in enough protein, adding in ready made products can be helpful. This list is not quite that. As an experienced doula, these are the tools that I recommend you bring to make your hospital room comfy & cozy and to help make your labor easier & help with pain relief. I have also included items that will be helpful for immediate postpartum.

If you have hired a doula, you may not need to bring many of these items as they may supply them. But it can never hurt to ask. And if you do not have a doula than you will definitely want to check out this list!

And doulas, I have included a special part of the list for you too! All of these items, besides the gown, socks & perineum spray & balm, are found in my own doula bag. But there are a few items, listed at the end that would be really helpful for just doulas to carry in their bag.

AND this list is not just for hospital births. It is handy to have these items for a home birth or birth center birth as well!

All of these items are tried & true by either me, my clients, or both! In my seven years of doing this work, there have been many things that I have cut from my bag but these items have stood the test of time.

I have included links for you to purchase these items. If you buy from the link provided for the items listed on Amazon, you help financially support me, so it is always appreciated!

For Families & Doulas:

1. A heating pad. I cannot emphasize this item enough. It is probably the most used item from my doula bag. It can be used on your back or under your belly to help with the intensity of contractions. I have had clients use it in the car (if they have appropriate outlets) while in transit to the hospital, use it in triage while we waited to be admitted, and of course used it while laboring in the hospital rooms. And it is a great tool postpartum as well. It is helpful with that postpartum cramping as well as an achy back from the horrible beds. Just know that a hospital will not let you use an extension cord with one. And you cannot use it if you have an epidural. This is the one I use and love!: Sunbeam Heating Pad

2. A rebozo. This is a traditional Mexican garment. Around the world, a rebozo is used in the birth space for many things. It is a handy item to have on hand to help with belly sifting, "shake the apples", and supported squatting. I usually recommend a 78 inch rebozo if you will just use it for birth, as I find it less bulky and easier to work with. But if you order a bigger size, it can be made into a ring sling by ordering the rings from my recommended vendor & following this link for a no-sew ring sling tutorial. I order my rebozos from this site, as they sell authentic rebozos: Lola My Love.

3. Knee pads. Labor involves lots of movement and many times when women are given no instruction, they instinctively lean, which means there will probably be lots of hands and knees. This is not super comfortable for your knees after a while. I recommend these certain knee pads as they are separate, no one long unit. Meaning you have a lot more options when it comes to using them! You can find them here, yoga knee pads.

4. A fan. Labor is hard work. And hormones can make you feel extra hot. Plus, if you plan on laboring in a tub or shower, you will absolutely get hot. A fan comes in handy. I recommend a stroller fan for the simple fact that it is bendy and can go anywhere! You can prop it up on the side of the tub. Wrap it around the bed rail. Hang it from an IV pole. And it is battery operated, so no need to worry about outlets. Bonus, it can be used on your stroller once baby arrives! You can purchase it by following this link: stroller fan.

5. TENS unit. This may not be for everyone but for some it is a great pain relief option. When applied to your back, the TENS uses electrical stimulation to help you deal with the intensity of labor. In my experience, this is very helpful with back labor (but know that you should be trying position work to get baby into better position and rid yourself of the back labor, this just helps in the meantime). And it can be a great option for laboring in the car if you are not able to have anyone do hands on techniques during your drive to the hospital. This is a link to the TENS unit I have & love.

6. A bluetooth speaker. To make the space calm, many women love to listen to music or relaxing tracks. A bluetooth speaker is an amazing tool in helping to ensure music can be heard throughout the room and over running water, if you are using the shower. This also keeps you from having to constantly drag your phone around. And there are many water proof options, making it safe to use in the steamy bathrooms if you labor in the shower. Bonus, get one with a strap and hang it from an IV pole! This is a link to purchase: wireless speaker

7. LED tea lights. Creating a calm space starts with great lighting. These little LED candles are perfect. They are safe to use in the hospital and easy to move around. I love to use them in the bathroom, to create a cave-like experience while laboring on the toilet or if the tub or shower are being used. This is the link where you can purchase the ones I use and love: LED tea lights

8. Essential oil diffuser. Another great idea for creating a calm space is to diffuse essential oils. This is not something for everyone as some people are very sensitive to smells. And you want to use safe oils, like lavender, that will be ok once baby arrives. I try to keep a diffuser contained to the bathroom or far away from where baby will be once they arrive. I also suggest smelling the oils in the bottle for a while before putting them into the diffuser, as you may not like them while in labor. Diffusing oils makes it very hard to remove them from the room, so you want to ensure you can tolerate them before diffusing them. Even if you do not like diffusing oils, the changing lights from my tried and true diffuser can be calming all on their own! To purchase, follow this link: essential oil diffuser.

9. Delivery gown. Many women do not prefer to wear hospital gowns. They are large, unflattering, and they make some feel like a sick patient. If you want to bring your own gown, Frida Mom makes a super comfy one. I strongly recommend this over another popular plain gown sold on Amazon, as these snaps at the shoulder come all the way undone on the Frida Mom gown. The other gown does not, which makes it impossible to come off if you have an IV. The color is dark enough to cover up stains but cute enough to not feel like you are a hospital patient. Heck, maybe grab a few! They make great nursing gowns too. To purchase, follow this link: Frida Mom Delivery Gown

10. Non-skid socks. The hospital will provide socks. They are quite large, not the most flattering. There is a huge array of ones available online now that are cute. The plus side, you can wear them postpartum at the hospital in place of slippers (which may actually be pretty slippery on hospital floors) and when you get home (so much easier than taking slippers or flip flops on and off before getting into bed or laying down to nurse). My clients have loved both of these brands: Merino Wool Grip Socks & Kindred Bravely Non-Slip Socks

11. Water bottle with a straw. I know, the hospital also provides these as well. But some do not like plastic. And some prefer water bottles that will fit into a cup holder. If you want to bring your own, that will keep your drinks cold & can keep your straw tucked away when not using, this is one I absolutely love! Follow the link to purchase: Klean Kanteen 16 oz Tumbler

12. Massage tools. Labor is hard work. I know I already stated this but it is important enough to repeat! Muscles get strained and tired. And many women love to have their backs massaged during contractions. This is one tool my clients have loved, follow this link to purchase: Roller Ball Massage Tool

13. Combs. Holding a comb in your hand, with the bristles pressing into the bottom of your fingers can help with pain relief in labor. You will want a sturdy comb & it is smart to buy two, one for each hand! My favorite combs are listed here, click the link to purchase: Wooden Combs

14. Tincture for after-birth pains. Cramping after baby is born is completely normal. It is actually healthy! It means your uterus is clamping back down to original size and in turn that helps control postpartum bleeding. The more babies you have, the more cramping you can expect. These herbal tinctures are helpful, especially when used with a heating pad on your belly. The one that I carry is from Forest & Meadow, you purchase it here: Postpartum Relief Tincture . My clients have also really liked this Wish Garden tincture, this is the link to purchase: AfterEase Tincture. (As a doula it is never my place to recommend herbal supplements. It is my place to let you know they exist as an option. Please do your own research to see what you are comfortable with & discuss with your care provider.)

15. Perineum care items. The hospital does provide Tucks pads. But if you would like to go one step further, I recommend bringing an herbal spray and balm. The herbs contained in these products will help promote healing & keep you as comfortable as possible. If you would like to support a small, local business, Forest & Meadow carries a wonderful product, found here: Perineal Salve & Perineal Spray . If you would prefer to order through Amazon, Earth Mama has a great option and you can buy it in a set, follow this link to purchase: Earth Mama Postpartum Recovery Kit

Doula Bag Items:

These are certainly items that families may find helpful to add to their arsenal, so do not think they are limited to only doulas. It is just my thought that these items may be more cost effective if used by a doula at multiple births.

1. Labor Progress Handbook. This book is brought out of my bag consistently. It is chock full of useful information. To purchase, follow this link: Labor Progress Handbook by Penny Simkin

2. Spinning Babies Quick Reference Guide. This is the most important resource I carry on me. It gets pulled out at every birth in which I believe there to be a dystocia of some kind. My copy is so worn! Click this link to purchase: Quick Reference Guide

3. Honey sticks. I feel like this is an essential for any doula bag. As someone who literally just saw juice save a birth, these can be invaluable. And a great price for 100 organic sticks! They are perfect for clients who have a cup without a straw or are drinking coconut water or juice in a container without a straw. They are long enough to reach to the bottom of big water bottles. But also work well to reach women who are situated in a way that is hard to reach or sitting all the way in the back of a corner tub. And they can be cut down if they are obnoxiously long. It is not a hobby, it is not only some of the time. It is truly my life. I understand the body to be whole. That symptoms are signs of larger imbalances, not isolated incidents to be managed with medicine. I know that true medicine comes from nutrient dense food, herbs that the Earth provides, stress management, exercise, fresh air, & sleep. This is the truth that I live by. This is the truth I embody for my family. This has been our way of life for almost a decade now.

I know that the body was built to do amazing things. I know that the body is smart and capable. I know that the body wants to heal. But I also know that the body has to be provided with the right things to be able to perform as it should. This is how I approach the care I provide for myself, my family, and my clients.

Holistic living led me to doula work. It fine tuned my practice. And has helped me support my clients in the best way that I know how. You need not be like minded to benefit from my care, just trust that I trust your body enough to know how best to birth your baby.

My holistic approach to birth consists of the following:

1. Trusting that the mother knows best ALWAYS! She knows what care is safest for her baby. She knows how to move in labor. She knows what to do when handling her baby right after birth. She knows the best decisions to make regarding rearing her children. We, as a birth team, have to trust this and encourage it.

2. Babies want to be in optimal position for birth. Babies use the room they are given. They are smart & know the best way. Mothers have the capacity to do simple exercises & receive outside help to prepare their bodies for birth & encourage baby to get into optimal position. Modern day life is not very conducive to pregnancy, natural movement that includes lots of squatting & walking is pretty nonexistent for most in Western cultures. This is where Spinning Babies, Webster certified chiropractic care, women's health physical therapy, prenatal yoga, & prenatal massage come in. Gentle & intentional movement as well as stress management and body work help prime mother & baby for the healthiest & safest birth for both.

3. God provides so much medicine straight from the Earth. Food is the first medicine; good nutrient dense, whole food. Herbs are the next line of defense. When working with a trained herbalist and/or a functional medicine doctor, you can find safe & effective means to deal with many common pregnancy ailments. Your body wants to be healthy & vibrant. While many things are now common in pregnancy, it does not make them normal.

4. Birth is normal, until it is not. Your body was designed to grow a baby and to birth them. The process of birth is very intentional, each piece works in harmony. We need to honor each part of labor for what it is. Many times humans feel we need to change the process, that it will fail unless we make it quicker and stronger. But there is space to honor how your body is working. Many times the solution to what ails us during birth is more time, more patience, more privacy, and more trust in the process. Our bodies give us the birth that we and our babies need. If this requires more intervention for either mom or baby's safety, many times a mother will intuitively know things need to change. They just need the space, respect, time, & information to make a truly informed decision.

It is my hope that my unique lifestyle & approach to birth help my clients be more confident heading into parenthood. This book is not written for birth. So why would I recommend it?
Birth is about you. It is about getting what you need for your family. Birth requires mamas to dig deep, to use their power to bring their baby earthside. What is needed for birth is a space in which mamas feel respected. That includes ensuring the people in that space respect you enough to allow you to birth in complete confidence.
You need to consider who you want to include in your birth space, who will be truly supportive of what you know you need during this most powerful yet vulnerable time. Reading Boundaries will help you gain the confidence and insight you need to determine if your care provider, medical staff, your doula, any family members, and even your partner fully support you.
As women, many times we feel we need to accommodate others. We feel the need to please others and not cause an uproar. Leaving a care provider who does not serve us, is uncomfortable. Telling your mom and sister that you do not want them to be there could cause a riff in your family dynamic. And standing up to your partner, to ensure you birth where you know you need to, can cause a lot of stress on a relationship. But birth is not the time to blur your boundaries, it is the time for you to establish strong boundaries and to ensure people support you in setting them.
During prenatal meetings, I help couples determine the birth that is right for them. This is the perfect time to decide who will help and hinder the birth that mamas know they need. It also opens up the conversation between partners, in case they unknowingly do not see eye to eye.
Once you have decided the type of birth you want, you will need the confidence to discuss this with your care provider and birth place. You will need to be confident enough to ensure that they not only understand what you want but that they will help you achieve it.
This also goes for your family. Birth is not a social affair. If you feel a certain friend or family member will support you, that is great! But if you feel that certain people will not support you, then you will need to be able to voice your needs to them. If they still do not support what you need, then you need to be strong enough to let them know that you cannot have them in attendance, even if they feel entitled enough to be there during one of your most private moments.
You will also need to ensure that the doula you have hired, if you have one, honors your wishes. A truly supportive doula knows that only you can make the decisions that are best for your family and they will not have an agenda that they plan on pushing onto you. If you have yet to hire one, ensure that you ask how they support families during the type of birth that you envision and how they support you if things would happen to change.
This book helps you understand what your boundaries are and why you are the way you are when it comes to your current boundaries. It then helps you use this information to understand how to set healthy boundaries in your relationships that bleed into your birth as well as other aspects of your life.
I will say this book is rooted in Christianity but I would not let that steer you away if you are not Christian, the principles still resonate true. Setting boundaries helps you live a life that is healthy for you and your family.
Pregnancy and birth are important in preparing you for parenthood. It helps you decide what is important to you and your partner and how you will raise your family. It is important to understand that you do not need to please others in raising your family and Boundaries helps you understand how to approach this with others in your life.

You just found out you are expecting. You have prepared and spent a lot of time deciding on your care provider, birth place, whether to hire a doula, and who you want at your birth. And more than likely you have thought of writing a birth plan. While considering a birth plan, have you heard "You are only setting yourself up for disappointment when things do not go the way you planned." Does this mean you should not write one?
I suggest looking at this in a different way. Do we tell women not to plan their dream wedding in case their groom does not show up? Do we tell women not to apply for a college in case they may not get in? When we look at it in this light, it sounds ludicrous to tell people to never plan for anything simply because there is a chance the plans may not go just as we hoped.
Birth is unpredictable, like anything in life. But planning for it ensures that you have a care provider and birth place that supports the type of birth you hope for. Planning helps ensure you know all of your options and that you made choices based on knowing all risks and benefits. And that if things do not go as planned, you were apart of the choices that affected your birth. And those choices were the best for your unique situation.
Planning also helps you be as proactive as possible. For example, if you know you really do not want to be induced, you may learn instances in which women do face induction: pre-eclampsia, choleostasis, large baby due to gestational diabetes, or because a care provider does not support you going past 41 weeks. Knowing this information may help you seek out nutritional advice on how to prevent medical conditions that require induction. And discussing your birth plan with your care provider may help you learn that your birth provider induces simply because of gestational age, which may lead you to look for a care provider who does.
As a doula, I explain to clients the importance of planning. The process helps you discover how you want to feel during your birth. It helps you discover how important every aspect of birth is and even if you cannot get certain things on your birth plan, there are ways to accommodate for those losses.
So what if you do plan a certain birth, you find a care provider who completely supports what you want, and you still end up with a birth that was not what you envisioned? Just like anything in your life, we process it. Disappointment is part of life, it is inescapable. But there are resources to help you get through this unique loss. It could be as simple as talking to a friend or family member who was in the same situation or maybe you will need more help. There are peer groups, like ICAN, professionals who are trained to deal with PTSD surrounding birth, and classes specifically meant for helping women process their births. It is quite normal to be happy to finally have your baby in your arms but upset how your birth went. This does not make you a bad mother, it makes you human. As someone who has seen a variety of births, who has supported many families in this process, fear of disappointment does not justify not creating a plan. You deserve to feel respected and supported during your birth and planning helps you get what you deserve.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-22748738191001421962019-01-07T07:41:00.003-08:002019-01-28T09:08:31.544-08:00Revamped Doula Support Program

What can you expect when you hire me as a doula? This blog post is all about the changes I have made to my program to help you better prepare for birth and postpartum. I love to provide a wealth of information to my clients so that you feel you have all the tools necessary to make the decisions that best suit your family. I believe that educated decisions can only come from weighing all risks and benefits and applying them to your unique situation.

First off, my support is rooted in holistic care. I am immersed in holistic living. This means I believe true health and healing come from within. My advice is rooted in diet, stress relief, good quality sleep, exposure to nature and exercise, regular chiropractic care, as well as herbal and homeopathic support when necessary.

The information I provide to clients is shared in electronic files. I have carefully chosen articles and created handouts and information sheets included in these files. The information is broken down into chunks:

Birth Plan Creation: I provide resources that I believe are important in creating the birth that you know is right for your family. The information provided includes a sheet that I compiled of all of the choices you could face in labor and birth along with risks and benefits of each choice. We use this sheet during our first prenatal meeting. I encourage all clients to take their birth plan to their provider. I also provide resources to help you process your meeting with your care provider regarding your birth plan. This will help you ensure that your care provider and birth place are exactly what you need to provide support for the birth you know is best for yourself.

Physical Prep: I believe to accomplish the birth that you desire, you need to start working towards it as early in pregnancy as possible. The information I provide on physical prep is rooted in nutrition, exercise for optimal positioning, chiropractic care, stress relief, and choosing beauty and cleaning products that are non-toxic.

Mental Prep: Our society does not talk about birth in a positive manner. I believe mental preparation is incredibly important because birth is managed by hormones which react sensitively to stress. The information included in this section helps you to change your mindset about birth and to help ensure that you go into your birth with as little fear as possible.

What to do During Birth: This section contains information on what I suggest doing during labor. I created a document on coping techniques to use in every stage of labor complete with descriptions and images. This document is what we use during our second prenatal meeting. This section also contains information on how partners are an integral part of birth and how they can best support moms.

Breastfeeding: This section contains information on how to prepare for breastfeeding. I created a document about issues to watch out for and what type of help you should seek for each type of issue. I also include information on how partners, chiropractic care, and CLCs & IBCLCs can provide support during breastfeeding. Lastly, I have also created a document on nutrition that supports a healthy breastfeeding relationship.

Postpartum Prep: Prep for the postpartum period is just as important as preparing for birth. It can be hard to find the support you need to fully heal and recover from birth as well as bond with and care for your new baby. The information contained in this section is to help you know what type of support you need and how to find it. It also contains information on signs of baby blues and postpartum depression and nutrition support that helps best to prevent and/or manage these issues, as well as when to reach out for professional help.

Resources: This section contains suggestions on resources you can use during pregnancy and the postpartum period. I am greatly connected in the birth community and all of the resources listed are either people I have used myself, people I know, or ones who come highly recommended to me.

I also provide clients access to an extensive lending library. I give each client two books to borrow throughout their entire pregnancy. These books are referenced often in the handouts I have created: The Natural Pregnancy Book and What to Eat When You're Pregnant. I also lend out the Spinning Babies Daily Essential DVD to help you stay comfortable during pregnancy as well as get and keep baby into optimal position.

While my support is rooted in holistic care and I understand the importance of a physiological birth I also understand that interventions were created for a reason. I help families understand when interventions can help in their particular situation and how to use them smartly to get the birth that is safest for them. I am not a doula that supports only unmedicated, vaginal birth but one that supports clients in whatever type of birth that they know is best for them. My goal is to ensure that clients feel completely supported and respected by their entire birth team. And that no matter which type of birth you experience, you feel you were truly apart of all of the decisions that were made and feel powerful and in control.

As a doula, I tell clients constantly to follow their intuition, instinct, and gut feeling. But what does that mean? How do you know what to do? This is a personal story of when I followed my intuition as a mother.
About a year ago, I was at work on a Saturday morning. My mom called and asked to take my boys out for the day. Since they were just sitting at home, bored, I told her that was perfectly fine. I called my boys to tell them to get ready. My teenager begged to stay at home. Normally I would have made him go, as I think it is super important for kids to spend time with family. But I had this nagging feeling in my gut and told him it was ok for him to stay home that day and that just his younger brother would go.
A few hours later, I received a few missed calls from my mom and then my sister. Before I picked up the phone I knew something was wrong (another gut feeling). My mom along with my youngest son and my sister's son had been in a bad car accident. They all walked away. The kids were in booster seats in the back seat, which was untouched. They came out with just seat belt burns on their necks. My mom had injuries from her seat belt as well, which after some time, we discovered were more serious and required surgery.
The other driver, involved in the accident, t-boned my mom's SUV while my mom was traveling 60 mph. The impact was so hard the SUV flipped on its side and skidded down the side of the highway. My mom and the kids walked away because the other driver hit the passenger side seat. There was absolutely nothing left of the seat. That seat would have been where my oldest son would have been sitting had he gone with my mom that day. I am sure that my oldest son would not have walked away from that accident or possibly would not have even survived. That strong feeling I had earlier that morning, to not let my oldest son go with my mom, saved his life.
You are given your children for a reason. Only you know what choices are best for them. We live in a society where we are told to constantly second guess ourselves. We hire others to make decisions for us and for our family based on their education and expertise. But these professionals do not have the most important factor, your intuition.
What does intuition feel like? It is a feeling that starts in your belly, it can feel like butterflies. Many times, it is a decision that you make without thinking; the knee jerk reaction you have to a situation. It is a feeling that you just cannot explain.
There is never a need to explain your gut feeling. It is yours alone. Others may never understand why you do what you do. And that is because they are not you. They do not know what you have experienced in your life, they do not know your children as intimately as you do. No one can ever judge another because no one has ever walked in your shoes.
Intuition is provided to everyone. We just have to be quiet enough to listen. And we also have to be brave enough to follow it. Some times the decisions we make, based on intuition, are not popular; they are not what everyone else is doing. It can be hard to stand up to family members, paid professionals, and even your own partner. But that nagging feeling will not go away easily. It can only be suppressed.
This story is one of many I have experienced in my fifteen years of being a mother. Some are not quite so shocking. Some of these decisions have completely changed our lives. There are times I have chosen not to listen to it and then regretted it. Hindsight has proven to me that I need to follow the gut feeling every time. Mothering can be difficult. Intuition is your God-given tool to make it a bit easier.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-65892185042590695012018-08-20T22:33:00.000-07:002018-08-20T22:33:20.489-07:00How I Somehow Linked My First Floating Experience with BirthToday I "floated" for the first time. If you are not aware of what this new phenomenon is, you float in a low level of salt water in complete silence and darkness, either in a small room or pod. For all my fellow 'Fringe' obsessors, think the sensory deprivation tank without the ability to enter someone else's mind or LSD.

The tank is supposed to provide a new level of relaxation. I would like to say my experience was super zen and calm. But it was kind of a clumsy mess and I spent a lot of the time, oddly thinking how my experience paralleled birth. Because that is what sensory deprivation does, right?! #doulalife #birthobsession

Because I am a wuss and I envisioned being in the pod as floating in a watery grave, I chose to do the room. For brevity sake, use my amazingly accurate drawing to envision what the room looks like:

When you first enter the room, there is light and music playing. Ten minutes into your float, they both go away, leaving you in complete darkness. Now as a 34 year old, who still runs up the basement steps to escape imagined terrors, this was absolutely terrifying. I instantly turned on the light. Five minutes into it, I knew I was robbing myself of the experience (plus I could save myself $65 and hang out in my own bathtub). So I turned out the light and freaked out again. I fumbled for the door, I left it cracked for a while. And then slowly closed it, but kept myself tethered to the handle on the door, so I could at least know where it was and keep my bearings.

The moment I let go of the door handle, I panicked again. I finally had the thought that this was insane. My obsession to control everything was ruining my experience. I have to admit that I am a recovering type A person. I have done so much work to heal myself. I meditate regularly, have a robust library filled with self help books that teach how to relinquish control and trust in the process, and I am knee deep in crystals and candles. I love yoga and massage. And yet I could not enjoy this experience that so many claimed help them relax. I am a zen-person failure!

And so I let go of the door handle and floated to the middle of the room. I had no idea where I was, where the door was, and could not see anything; a control freak's worst nightmare. Yet, after a while, I began to love it. I trusted that I was safe, there were four walls to contain me, I was not just blindly floating out into the unknown.

During this epiphany, I began to think of how this experience related to birth. Birth is a full submission to the process. Birth is floating into the middle of the room, without tethering yourself to the door or turning on the light. It is receiving help and reassurance from your support team but knowing that you have to dig deep inside yourself and trust your body and baby.

The four walls of the room, represent your birth support team. They are your anchor to the Earth, they help contain your safety. And just as I felt the need to periodically to touch them, to reassure my bearings, I kept pushing off of them into the "unknown." A good support team knows when to help and when to step back and let you intuitively do the work that only you know how to do. They provide you reassuring words, compassionate touch, and information when needed. But they know you need to delve deep into the birth process and let you propel yourself into the unknown of birth once you received what you need. A good support team merely supplies you with a safe space instead of control of your birth.

The light, the door, they signify the need for control in birth, the need to constantly intervene. When I turned on the light or opened the door, I needed to "see" that I was safe. But that was because I did not trust that I was safe. I was so afraid of the unknown that I constantly had to intervene instead of enjoy the experience. Constant monitoring, frequent vaginal exams, controlling the way women birth, all provide a satisfaction for our curiosity but many times do not improve a healthy birth. Of course in times of emergencies, this information can be valuable (like I would want to see the door in case of a fire). Otherwise, the need for constant information impedes on the process of birth.

The point of my story: delve into the unknown of birth. Prepare yourself with a birth team that supports and respects you. Go into the experience with love, not fear. You may be amazed at how much you enjoy your experience when you truly let go. And its wise not to shave your legs an hour before submerging yourself into a tank of salt water;)

"Why did you become a doula?" is the most asked question I receive at interviews. Usually followed up with, "What did you do before doula work?" I will say, my answer to the second questions is not the typical answer. I did not come from a healthcare background. I was not someone who spent my working days caring for others. I did not watch babies or work as a lactation consultant. My switch of careers even surprised myself.

In celebration of International Doula Month, which ended yesterday (because you know life happened) I planned on writing a piece about my decision to become a doula. And to show people that birth workers come from all walks of life.

Like many others, my decision to become a doula started after the births of my own children. My children were born before the many wonderful birthing centers and midwifery care options became common place in St. Louis. I birthed in hospitals. I saw the traditional OB. But what set me apart from most women, was that I literally showed up having my babies for both of my births. I labored outside of the hospital, never received pain relieving drugs, and arrived only moments before my babies were born. Yet, the care I received during my births was atrocious. The first, I was given a completely unnecessary epsiotomy as my 6 lb. baby was already crowning when I arrived and I literally pushed him out in three pushes with ease. The doctor never told me what he was doing, he just did it.

With my second, upon arrival the crass nurse assured me I was not in labor at all, as I was talking and had driven myself to the hospital. But upon inspection, she found me 8 cm dilated. She insisted I lay in bed for monitoring, even though I was in transition and absolutely had to stand. I asked for walking monitors and was told I had no choice but to have regular ones and to lay in bed for twenty minutes. She left, never pulling up the side of the bed. Moments later, my water broke and my body started pushing. I could not even reach the call light. The nurse walked in minutes later and rushed to get a doctor. He came in and yelled at me to stop pushing as my son was literally coming. My epsiotomy scar tore open from the fast birth and the doctor bitterly told me that this is why he told me not to push, as he stitched my up with no anesthesia. The procedure at the time, was to take baby away immediately after birth and weigh and bathe them. I sat there for 20 minutes being stitched and separated from my baby, crying as my baby cried, knowing that this was not right.

During my second pregnancy my mom told me she thought I should hire a labor coach. This was long before Facebook was the network it has come to be and I had no idea how to find one. I educated myself. I filled out a birth plan. I thought I would be fine. But the short 10 minutes I was there before my son arrived, I found myself fighting with the staff to be heard, to be taken seriously. I realized that the moments following birth are some of your most vulnerable and that you need support to voice what you know is right for you and your baby. And so, years later, I decided to become the help that I had needed during my own births.

I did not always have an interest in birth. I graduated from SLU with a degree in Communication, when my oldest son was four. I immediately went into the customer service field, working at a manufacturing plant. And did this for ten years. It was not until I was eight years into my career that I felt this nagging to explore birth work. My kids were older and I realized it was the perfect time for me to pursue it.

My mom had all four of her children without pain medication. She also breastfed all of us. I was lucky to grow up in a household in which this was the norm. Consequently, I never feared birth. I attribute this to my own ability to birth my children in the same way. My mom was the one who opened up my world to birth work, as she had considered midwifery when she was in nursing school, but did not pursue it because of the laws in Missouri at the time. Being an RN, I would often call her and ask her about birth especially when I would hear of someone encountering an issue with their labor, as I wanted to understand physiologically why it happened. After numerous conversations, she just blurted out one day "Why don't you become a doula?" Up until this moment, I had never heard that term. My children were ten and five at the time and yet this term had never entered my language. I had heard the term labor coach yet never this one.

I looked into doula work. It sounded intriguing. I started reading birth books. And watched "The Business of Being Born." I realized that it was completely normal to feel cheated about my births despite the fact that I had healthy babies. I realized that there was an epidemic of women who were mistreated during their births. But that there was hope. I decided I had to be one of those people to work towards change.

It took two years for me to take the training. Doula work, in comparison to the job I had at the time, did not pay as well. It was daunting thinking how I would support my family doing this work and so I put off taking the training. I made the decision in 2015, that even if I did not pursue it as a career, that I needed to offer the work in some way. My push to attend the October 2015 training, was when one of my friends asked me to do it so I could be her doula for her baby that was expected in December.

The training was life changing. I met amazing women who were doing amazing work. I left the training invigorated. I attended just a few births that first year, mostly close friends, as juggling a full time job, kids, and doula work was hard. But the passion kept gnawing at me. Birth work was my calling and it offered so much more than the job I had.

In December 2016, I had the opportunity to leave my full time job. I had savings that would support my family for six months while I got the business up and running. It was a huge leap of faith but I announced that my last day at my old job would be January 6, 2017. I was reassured that my decision was the right one, when I received an inquiry on Christmas morning. I was hired just days after that.

The rest is history. I have met so many wonderful people through my work: clients and colleagues. Birth work has become a normal part of my life and it is hard to imagine that at one time, my life was so vastly different from what it is now.

This work has not only provided me with professional satisfaction but has helped me discover a new way to live. I know how unpredictable life can be but also how rewarding it can be when you trust the process is taking you right where you need to be. I love my children more deeply (which seems impossible). I have a new regard for the strength of women. And I understand more fully, that intuition trumps everything.

It is not the norm in our society to birth without fear or hesitation, to fully embrace all of the parts of it, pleasant or unpleasant. But this view of birth, mirrors our perception of life in general. Many of us do not live life without the same fears and hesitations. But I think many would agree, that living fearlessly, trusting in what is to come despite not having complete control, is much more enjoyable. My goal is to bring that outlook to birth and early parenthood. In many ways, I feel that teaching families about the power of birth, the power of their own intuition, not only sets them up for the arrival of their baby but sets them up with new skills for life. I know delving into birth work has changed my perspective on life itself and I like to think that every family that hires a doula, takes a piece of that with them.

I know that my path leading me to birth work was not the typical one. But I like to think my experiences in a very different field have helped me become a one-of-a-kind doula. If anything, working in a job that was not the right fit for me, helps me reaffirm that doula work is what I need to be doing. There are times I doubt myself, there are times this work is hard. But I know deep down that what I had before in no way compares to the work I do now.

Up front, doulas may seem expensive. Some people think they are hired to replace another important person in the birth space, like the partner or the birthing woman's mother. But doulas are an integral member of a birth team.

Doulas' fees may seem steep. But birth work is truly the work of the heart. Doulas' fees covering many things:
-Doulas spend quite a bit of money on their initial doula training and usually take additional training courses to keep up with the most recent information.
-Supplies like books, birth balls, massage tools, snacks, rebozos, must be bought and restocked.
-Many doulas need to pay for child care while they attend prenatal meetings and births, which are unpredictable and can last days.
-Doulas need to be compensated for the time spent away from their families while attending prenatal meetings and births. With birth being unpredictable, doulas can put anywhere from 8 hours to 50 hours into a client's pregnancy and birth.
-Doulas are on call for normally four weeks. This four weeks means no planned vacations, never traveling more than a few hours from home, possibly missing out on events like concerts and children's birthdays.

Doulas provide:
-A relationship that starts during pregnancy and blooms with every prenatal meeting. This ensures that the doula and couple have a close relationship before labor ever begins.
-Ongoing support, from the moment that the mother feels she needs help. This includes support at home before the midwife joins a family or it is time to go to the hospital.
-A doula brings a wealth of knowledge into the birth space including relaxation and comfort measures.
-A doula also brings a calming presence with emotional support and encouragement.

Books may contain some of the information that doulas know. Care providers may emulate some of the characteristics of doulas. But neither can replace a doula entirely. Books do not provide hands that comfort or calming words when you think you cannot go on. Care providers, while incredibly knowledgeable and healing, must worry about the mother and the baby's medical needs if nececssary while a doula focuses on her emotional needs as well as her partner and other family members.

There was a time when females of all ages would help support a birthing woman. Our modern society has robbed us of the ability to know how birth can truly be. Most modern women do not possess the innate knowledge that comes with attending physiological birth from a young age. Doulas are the modern replacement for this feminine rite of passage. The support is completely irreplaceable and worth every penny.
It helps instill a practice of breathing and mindfulness that will help expecting families deal with the stress that can accompany pregnancy as well as be in tune with the mind during labor, making sometimes for an easier birth and recovery period. All while instilling the amazing benefits of mindfulness for parents and baby.

Calm Birth is perfect for any expecting family: planned natural birth, planned medicated birth, planned cesarean birth, first birth, second, third, or fourth birth!

Here are some questions you may have about the class itself:

I have never meditated before, is this class for me? This class is for anyone, no matter if you have meditated before or not. I will provide pointers on how to include meditation practices and mindfulness into your daily routine.

I cannot sit on the floor in the traditional meditation pose, is this class for me? While sitting in the traditional pose is the most beneficial pose for meditation, I will show you other ways to sit that may be more comfortable. Even if you sit in a chair, you will still receive the many benefits meditation offers.

I have already taken a childbirth class, will this be redundant? The Calm Birth class is not a childbirth education class. It is a compliment to traditional childbirth education.

I've already had a wonderful birth with my previous pregnancy, will I still get something out of this class? Calm Birth helps families prepare during pregnancy, helping them be mindful and recover quicker, no matter the type of birth. The tools can be used during any type of birth. And the practice stretches far beyond pregnancy and birth as Calm Birth offers tracks for the postpartum period. And studies have shown that children who are born to a mother who practiced meditation while pregnant, receive many benefits like healthier brain development and are more apt to continue mindful practices in their life.

I have hired a midwife and/or doula, what can this class offer beyond what I am already receiving? Meditation and mindfulness is a tool that you can bring yourself. It will compliment all of the great care and support you are already going to receive.

I am so excited to be offering these classes in the very near future, in the St. Louis area. This will not be the typical Child Birth prep class. How do you know if it is right for your family? Calm Birth helps any expecting family as meditation helps ensure a healthy birth and baby brain development. It helps the family, as a whole, become closer and establish a meditation practice that will extend far beyond pregnancy and birth. But Calm Birth can really help the following families:
-You are expecting your first baby. Calm Birth is an amazing way to help mentally prepare for the unknowns of labor.

-You plan on having a baby in the very near future. Calm Birth helps establish mental and physical health that makes for a healthy pregnancy. And meditation helps in the positive visualization that can be helpful in becoming pregnant.

-You had a previous traumatic birth. Calm Birth helps with getting into a good place to start to identify the issues with your previous birth and possibly seek out the help you need to work through them. This way you can prepare for a well supported, respected birth. Calm Birth helps you get into a mental state to relax and prepare for the birth that you need.

-You are planning a medicated and/or Cesarean birth. Meditation in general helps the immune system and the body's ability to heal.

-You are experiencing a stressful pregnancy or time during pregnancy. Meditation helps in dealing with the regular stresses of pregnancy as well as any extraordinary stresses you may experience. This can help in alleviating or preventing any health issues for mom and baby that may be caused by extra stress.

-You experienced a mental block during your last birth. Mental blocks can impede labor and meditation helps get you into a good place for your next birth.

These are ways to cope with the loss of your ideal birth.

1. Be prepared. The best thing you can do is to ensure that you have a plan for your birth as well as a backup plan. Present this to your care giver to ensure that they fit this plan as well as the hospital or place you plan to deliver. Hiring a doula can be especially helpful as well. While a doula cannot ensure a certain birth outcome, they can help you feel confident in the decisions you make regarding your birth. Preparation and hiring a doula will help you realize that you did everything in your power before having to veer from your original birth plan.

2. Adopt a regular meditation practice. Meditation does amazing things for your health. Meditation helps support your mental health and as well as your immune system. While it can be integral in ensuring the birth that you wish for it can also help your body and mind heal after birth interventions. Meditation can help you heal in the post partum phase.

3. Accept help. Surround yourself with people who will help with housework, cooking, and your other children. This will allow you optimal time to bond with your baby and focus on yourself when needed. A post partum doula can be extremely helpful in this situation.

4. Find someone to talk to who understands your feelings. Talking about your birth can be healing. Your birth doula can help in this regard, as they witnessed your birth and can help you remember certain details. And a doula (birth or post partum) can be an incredibly good listener and help you sort through your feelings.

5. Seek professional help if need be. If you really feel down and cannot shake the feeling of depression, especially if you feel the need to harm you or your baby, you may need to seek professional help. Know that this is ok and birth trauma is very real.

Your birth is important, it affects the relationship between you and your baby. It affects your health and well being as well as your baby's. Understanding the importance helps you know your feelings surrounding your birth are vital and need to be validated. Never discount the importance of birth.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-61010025841592939982017-01-15T21:45:00.001-08:002017-01-15T21:48:04.688-08:00Calm BirthI am very excited to announce that I will be offering Calm Birth classes. Calm Birth is a method of meditation tailored for expecting families. Calm Birth offers three unique types of meditation for pregnancy and birth:

Womb Breathing: Practice of breathing in vital energy to your womb that will help you escape your mind and bring you into awareness. This will help families overcome their fears and walk into their birthspace with clear minds. This method will also help women cope with the pain of labor and help them physically heal faster from birth.

Practice of Opening: This practice will help families focus on their bodies and bond with their baby. It is a great relaxation tool to help families sleep and relax into the early stages of labor. Practice of Opening also helps heal the mother and baby's nervous system as well as immune function.

Giving & Receiving: The practice of Giving & Receiving allows the family to heal from past traumas. It will also allow women to use their innate ability to heal others. And this practice allows the partner to send healing energy to the mother during labor; to be active participants in their partner's birth.

Calm Birth also offers a very healing program for the postpartum time.

This page shows all of the benefits Calm Birth can provide for families and new babies: http://www.calmbirth.org/whymeditate/#/for-your-health/

And what sets Calm Birth apart from other childbirth preparation classes is that the practices learned through Calm Birth can be used for the rest of a person's life. Meditation has proven effects in pre-conception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. It has also been proven that babies who have experienced meditation in utero, are more likely to continue the practice.

Imagine, Calm Birth is not to just benefit yourself but your new child, your family, and the world around you! I am so excited to expose this life changing practice to families in the area!magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-76168144802703062152016-12-26T06:48:00.001-08:002016-12-26T06:48:42.526-08:00What is a Doula?

I have to admit, when I tell people I am a doula most people normally have no idea what a doula is. Even when I type in doula in Microsoft Word, the program does not recognize it! So this is my elevator speech: A doula is a non-medical support person hired by an expectant woman/family to help navigate the intricacies of pregnancy and birth.

Doulas offer support, bottom line. They help women and families understand birth better so that they are educated and can make sound decisions for themselves, no matter the type of birth they envision. Many women who have hired doulas, say they feel like they were in charge of the decisions surrounding their birth, even if the birth did not quite turn out as they had planned. And when women feel confident in their birth decisions, it has been proven they feel confident in motherhood and can have an easier time transitioning into caring for their new little one. Pregnancy and birth shape a baby and mother in more ways than science can possibly understand. And when stress is reduced, it benefits both mom and baby. A doula can be the bridge between an expecting family and the unknowns of pregnancy.

You can expect the following services from most doulas:

Nonjudgmental support surrounding the decisions you make regarding your pregnancy and birth.

Evidence based information on anything you have questions on or are unsure about.

Ways in which your birth partner can support you during pregnancy and labor.

Continuous physical and emotional support during labor including natural pain relief techniques, relaxation techniques, controlled breathing, and encouragement.

Reprieve support during labor, for when your partner may need a break.

Breastfeeding support shortly after birth, if you choose to breastfeed.

Postpartum visits to discuss the birth and to check on your general well being.

References to other professionals such as lactation consultants, chiropractors who specialize in pregnancy care, acupuncturists, massage therapists, birth photographers, etc.

In short, doulas mother the mother. To hire a doula, is to provide yourself with a gift that goes well beyond birth and pregnancy and will continue to benefit you throughout motherhood.

A healthy pregnancy can mean lower instances of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, difficulty during labor, and the necessary use of medical interventions.

Most know that eating right and exercise are key to a healthy pregnancy. But a truly healthy pregnancy goes beyond nutrition and optimal fetal positioning, your mind must be healthy as well. It is a tough concept for most Americans, to understand the role the mind plays in health. We live in a very busy, high stress society. And many times if a mental issue arises, pharmaceutical medications are prescribed. It should be noted that even though drugs can help it is still recommended to follow a mindfulness regimen to get to the root of the issue. Plus pregnancy brings along a whole other level of stress: financial stability, keeping baby healthy, juggling work/family with the pregnancy, unsupportive family members, etc.

When your body and mind are stressed, cortisol is produced, a buildup over time can be harmful. It is proven that babies who are exposed to high levels of stress, while in utero, are more likely to have mental issues and developmental delays. A hindered mindset will also impede labor. The laboring mother needs to produce the optimal amount of oxytocin to start and maintain labor and she also needs a certain level of endorphins, which are the natural pain relief produced by the body. But mental blockage can impede the right hormones from being produced and in turn make labor more difficult or stop it all together. A calm mental state will also help the immune system as well as the healing process after birth.

It is apparent that mental clarity and mental health are important in pregnancy, birth, and in the postpartum period. To achieve this, you can start a regimen in early pregnancy. Practicing throughout pregnancy makes you more aware of the pregnancy itself and will prepare you for the ultimate test, birth. Mindfulness can be achieved by daily meditation, yoga, massages and keeping a journal to jot down your feelings about pregnancy and life in general. There are several books available to help you on your journey to self discovery, some even tailored for pregnant women.
This practice is also helpful beyond pregnancy and birth. It will help you adjust to life with a newborn and a parent in general. Focusing on yourself is not just a luxury, it is a necessary element to help you become the healthiest person and parent you can be!magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-18993052399985244532016-11-22T21:49:00.001-08:002016-11-22T21:49:24.616-08:00The Lowdown on Pregnancy & Nutrition

As a doula, I want to support your family on your journey to the birth that you envision for yourself. I also know the importance of preparation during pregnancy in helping you achieve your ideal birth. This has lead me to find services that I can offer to help you before labor even starts. I am so excited to announce that I am in the process of studying nutrition and pregnancy through Birth Arts International.
Since having my boys, I have made drastic changes in my family's diet. I can attest to the drastic changes you will see when you start eating for health. This has also helped draw me to nutrition. Pregnancy is a really important time to start and maintain optimal nutrition. It is crucial to be mindful throughout your pregnancy and this includes what you put in your body. By staying mindful of what you eat and the purpose it serves you and your growing baby, you can stay connected to the end goal; starting your relationship off with your new baby, healthy and happy.
When nutrition is neglected, the body is neglected. It takes a lot of energy and strength to create and nourish a baby properly. By ensuring your body is equipped with the right fuel you could decrease your chance of complications in both pregnancy and labor. And you are ensuring that your baby is getting the healthiest start possible.
After my training, I will be able to offer clients basic nutrition advise and where to lead them if the help needed is outside of my scope of practice. My main goal is to help families get off on a healthy start and continue these practices long after their baby is born.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-71807020459557510552016-07-12T19:13:00.001-07:002016-11-18T08:25:49.357-08:00As a Doula, I Do Not Want You to Need MeMost would think the last thing a doula would state is that she does not want her clients to need her. You would think this sort of statment would mean that the doula is committing professional suicide. But it is not what you think.

The truth is a baby knows how to be born. A mother knows what to do to bring her baby earthside. Those are the only tools necessary to bring a baby into this world: the baby and the mother. Anyone else is just a witness or support to the process. It takes a very confident birth worker to state, "You do not need me to birth your baby."

What I would like to hear instead, "I am so glad you were here.", "Your support meant the world to me.", or "I am so glad you shared in this event with my family." Because the truth is, it is an honor to be invited to the birth of a baby. It is a life changing event that most families experience but a few times. It is an event that changes a family forever. And for a family to entrust me to experience this with them, is a true gift.

I have now come to understand that my services compliment an already perfect process. My services come in handy in supporting a mother who knows what she is doing but cannot do it all. My services help a spouse become an irreplaceable asset in their child's birth. My services ensure that this new family is well cared for so they can take of the hard work.

As a doula, I want you to want me at your birth. I do not want you to need me. Because I now realize that you are already prepared for the birth, I just want to provide the support and resources for you to realize this for yourself.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030062853913109602.post-452760094480627832016-04-03T08:58:00.004-07:002016-04-03T08:58:57.762-07:00What Birth Can BeI was introduced to Whapio Diane Bartlett's Holistic Stages of Labor by Gena Kirby, at one of her workshops. It has changed the way I view a birthing family. It broke down the stages eloquently. There are no numbered stages, no medical jargon, no one size fits all signs of each stage. It shows labor and birth as a process beyond earthly limits. It shows how natural, untamed, and powerful birth can be, which is not a view of birth that our society typically sees. It depicts a process in which the mother, father, and baby know what to do. It proves that the bond that conceived the baby will bring the baby into this world. You can read about the stages here:

After reading Bartlett's understanding of the birthing process, I was interested in looking at how birth perceptions have changed.

Depictions of birth throughout time has changed drastically in the last century and a half. Birthing women used to be viewed as strong and powerful, knowing what to do when the time came for her baby to enter the world.

Many times these women would be supported by other women and strong men but they were still trusting their bodies, babies, and instincts to birth.

But as the medical profession stepped in, birth came to be known as this:

Please note that the mother is almost completely absent from sight in this photo.

While she the mother is pictured in this photo, she is in a position that is known to be non-conducive for labor. Making it harder on both the mother and baby. The only one advantaged by this is the medical team.

Birth is now synonomous with frightening looking tools that are largely used when women are given medical interventions or are in positions that make pushing non-conducive.

Again, in these next two images the mother is not the focal point. The doctors are the saviors, delivering the babies to the new parents.

The images of birth show how our societal perceptions have changed. Birth became something to be intervened with, a process not to be trusted. It became a profession to "deliver" babies, handing them to the mother as a gift that is being bestowed upon them by you, instead of viewing it as a process that the family is in control of. Consequently, mothers became wary, they became compliant, the natural processes became suppressed by interventions and advice from medical professionals. Fathers were absent from the birth. And when they were finally included in the birth space, it was as an observer of their partner's "suffering" of labor; standing back, unable to help in the procedures being performed.

Thankfully a revolution has started. One in which the power of birth is being brought to light.

Modern birth can look like this:

Or this:

Birth is a natural process. It can need intervention when medically necessary. But however the outcome, it cannot be denied that the mother, father, and baby hold an intrinsic power. The process does not need to be broken down into well defined stages, labeled with medical jargon. The process is not something that the mother is suffering from, in which she needs to be saved. The process needs to be understood as a natural, cosmic occurrence. This process, when it is respected, leads to the start of a powerful, wonderful journey for the new family.
I came into this role hoping to empower women and improve the outcome of their births so that they could have a better start and relationship with their new baby. But in this quest I was leaving out one very important piece: the partner. Without them, the family is not complete.

Birth is not just about the mom and baby. Birth is about the new family that is being formed. After attending a rebozo workshop with Gena Kirby, my whole perspective on doula work has changed. I realize I must step back and provide the means for the father to support the mother and in turn help facilitate a better pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period for all.

I admit, my weak point was involving the partner. As women, we love to mother, we love to nurture. I selfishly wanted to be that person that the mother turned to when she needed comfort and reassurance. There is a certain high I got by feeling needed. But Gena's workshop made me realize that I can never replace the partner. The bond between the partner and mother is what conceived the baby and what is needed to bring the baby into the world. I came to realize, I do not want my clients to think that they cannot birth without me. I want them to realize that they were grateful I was there but that I was just a catalyst for something that already existed within them. I simply showed them how to deepen their relationship so that they could do what is instinct to birth their baby together.

I am excited to bring this new knowledge to my clients. I want them to know I value the partner and their irreplaceable role during the whole process. I will now use time during the prenatal visits to share with couples ways in which they can bond during pregnancy that can be brought into the birth space. By engaging in these relaxation techniques throughout pregnancy, the intimacy and stress relief can be easily transferred to labor and birth. This ensures that labor and birth is not just something the mother experiences but one that the partner is an necessary part of.

I am humbled to be a birth worker. I am humbled to be invited to witness such a powerful moment in a family's life. And I am humbled to have met Gena. She opened my eyes to what birth can be, an extension of love between two people that extends far beyond the birth space. I am truly blessed to be a doula.magnoliabirthdoulaservices@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17651761865379490138noreply@blogger.com0
